The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is proud to sponsor the J. David Barry, MD, ABMS Scholar to honor the legacy of J. Dave Barry, MD. Dr. Barry was an inspiring member of the ABEM Board of Directors, a dedicated volunteer, and an advocate for work in physician wellness and burnout. Learn more about Dr. Barry and his legacy.  

About the ABMS Scholars Program 

The ABMS Scholars Program supports early-career physicians and researchers in their research and facilitates their evolution as health care leaders within and across the ABMS community. ABMS Scholars’ research contributes to the medical literature that supports the development and ongoing assessment of specialists who positively impact the quality, safety, and value of patient care. 

This program is ideal for individuals looking to positively impact their profession as well as specialty certification through research. 

Applications are being accepted for early-career Emergency Medicine physicians who preferentially have an interest in one or more of the following areas: 

  • Experience as a military physician 
  • Physician wellness research such as burnout, fitness, and mindfulness 
  • Residency education and research 
  • Innovations in continuing certification assessment and education 
  • Medical Toxicology 

An award of $15,000 is provided to support the direct costs of research and travel expenses associated with program participation.
