A call for public comment on accredited fellowship training for Disaster Medicine is now open.
The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is asking for support of their proposal to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to establish ACGME-accredited fellowship training in Disaster Medicine.
The American Board of Medical Specialties has approved Disaster Medicine as a new subspecialty.
ACGME-accredited Disaster Medicine training would establish consistent national standards and help ensure physicians receive dedicated and standardized, high-quality training to lead disaster management prior to, during, and following natural or manmade disasters.
Approximately 18 non–ACGME-accredited Disaster Medicine fellowships are currently sponsored by Departments of Emergency Medicine.
The public comment period is open through Friday, November 20, 2026. For those interested in commenting, key points may include the value of standardized, accredited training in preparing physicians to deliver safe, consistent, evidence-based care; coordinating multidisciplinary response; and making sound clinical decisions when health care systems and resources are under significant strain.
ABEM encourages comments in support of ACGME-accredited Disaster Medicine fellowship training. Please share this opportunity with colleagues or organizations that may wish to express support. Thank you for considering this request and for supporting the advancement of accredited Disaster Medicine training.
The period of public comment is open through Friday, November 20. Please share your support!
