Become an Item Writer

Call for Applications: Opens July 15 - September 15

Volunteer item writers play a crucial role in supporting the development, revision, and review of test questions for ABEM exams. The first and most crucial step in the item development process is the drafting and submission of new test items. We welcome eligible physicians to apply for this opportunity to draw upon your medical knowledge and clinical practice to write ABEM test items.

Eligibility

  • Be an ABEM-certified physician
  • Be clinically active in the practice of Emergency Medicine
  • Be actively participating in ABEM continuing certification
  • Have completed an ACGME- or RCPSC-accredited Emergency Medicine residency
  • Possess Item Writer Attributes

Time Commitment

Selected applicants are offered a 3-year term with opportunities for reappointment based on participation and performance. Item writers must complete three item assignments per year; approximately 24 items total. New writers must attend a training session before beginning their first term. The appointment requires regular attendance and participation at the annual Item Writers Workshop, a three-day in-person event usually held in July.

Writers earn CME credit for item development and participation in the Item Writers Workshop.

Application Process

  • Applications are accepted from July 15 through September 15 each year
  • Applicants complete the Item Writer Application
  • A professional colleague completes the Item Writer Recommendation or provides an email or letter of recommendation
  • Applications are reviewed by the Board in October and November
  • Additional information will be posted on the ABEM website during the application process
